How Industry–University–Research Collaboration Is Making Hubei a Global CNC Machine Tool Leader

Hubei Province is rapidly establishing itself as China’s most advanced hub for CNC machine tools and intelligent CNC systems. In a recent segment on Hubei TV’s Yangtze River Observation (aired May 31), Chen Jihong, Chairman of Wuhan Huazhong Numerical Control Co., Ltd. (Huazhong CNC), and Xu Guangda, Director of the National Innovation Center of CNC Technology, explained how deep collaboration between industry, universities, and research institutions is accelerating innovation — and helping Chinese CNC technology close the gap with leading international competitors.

Hubei’s Complete CNC Machine Tool Industrial Chain

CNC machine tools are often called the ‘surgical instruments’ of modern manufacturing, and CNC systems are their intelligent ‘brains.’ Hubei has built a full industrial chain that spans CNC systems, core functional components, and high-end machine tools — one of the most complete ecosystems of its kind in China.

By focusing on high-end manufacturing applications and leveraging strong enterprise–university–research partnerships, Hubei has secured a competitive advantage in advanced CNC technology and industrial machine tool innovation.

HNC-10 Intelligent CNC System: World’s First AI-Integrated CNC with Micron-Level Precision

During the broadcast, reporter Luo Jinyu showcased a precision test workpiece designed to demonstrate the ultra-high-precision machining capability of Huazhong CNC’s flagship product: the HNC-10 Intelligent CNC System.

The workpiece features 127 micro pins, each just 50 microns in diameter — thinner than a human hair (approximately 70 microns in diameter). These ultra-fine structures were produced entirely by the HNC-10.

The HNC-10 Intelligent CNC System is the world’s first CNC system to integrate both an AI chip and a large-scale AI model. Key capabilities include:

  • Intelligent feedforward control technology that limits dynamic precision error to within 1 micron
  • Recognition as one of the world’s top ten technological advances in intelligent manufacturing
  • AI-driven optimization that directly addresses longstanding precision challenges in five-axis and high-speed machining

AI Technology Accelerates CNC Innovation at Huazhong CNC

According to Chen Jihong, AI technology has become a critical driver for narrowing the technological gap with leading international CNC manufacturers. To accelerate innovation and move faster from laboratory to factory floor, Huazhong CNC organized three consecutive 100-day technical innovation campaigns, involving more than 300 engineers and researchers. These concentrated efforts significantly shortened the development and commercialization cycle for advanced CNC technologies.

A New Industry–University–Research Collaboration Model for CNC Technology

The technological breakthroughs at Huazhong CNC are underpinned by a highly effective collaborative innovation model — one that Hubei has developed specifically to overcome the traditional gap between academic research and industrial application.

Traditionally, universities focused on basic research while enterprises concentrated on product development, often resulting in slow technology transfer and low commercialization rates. Hubei has resolved this by embedding universities directly into the enterprise R&D process.

Huazhong CNC and the National Innovation Center of CNC Technology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology collaborate across the entire innovation cycle:

  • Fundamental and applied research driven by real industrial scenarios
  • Key technology development based on specific enterprise requirements
  • Pilot testing co-managed by academic and industrial teams
  • Industrial application and commercialization led by the enterprise

As Xu Guangda explained, universities supply foundational research anchored to future market needs, the innovation center advances key breakthroughs based on enterprise demands, and companies convert those breakthroughs into commercial products and industrial solutions.

Shared Investment and Risk: The Foundation of Sustainable CNC Collaboration

To ensure long-term sustainability, Hubei has established mechanisms that align investment, risk, and rewards across all participating organizations. Enterprises take the lead in applying for major national research projects, with universities serving as core R&D partners from the outset. This creates a shared-interest community in which risks are jointly managed and achievements are collectively recognized.

Chen Jihong noted that nearly all of Huazhong CNC’s major awards and technological achievements have been accomplished through industry–university–research cooperation. The company has also established a permanent team of full-time embedded researchers, fostering a stable, long-term collaborative relationship with academic institutions.

Open Innovation Platform Drives Adoption of Advanced CNC Systems

Technological breakthroughs are only valuable when they reach the factory floor. As a national-level ‘chain leader’ enterprise in China’s CNC system industry, Huazhong CNC has built an open pilot-testing and industrialization platform available to the entire sector.

The company has partnered with more than 60 machine tool manufacturers and leading universities — including Beihang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University — to promote cross-regional collaborative innovation and accelerate the real-world adoption of advanced CNC technologies.

Case Study: Domestic CNC System Outperforms International Competitors

Chen Jihong stressed that the ultimate measure of CNC innovation is validated performance in real-world industrial environments. Through joint development with a laser processing enterprise, Huazhong CNC engineered a high-performance CNC solution whose precision and production efficiency exceeded comparable international products. As a result, the customer progressively increased its adoption rate of domestic CNC systems to over 80% — a concrete demonstration of the competitiveness of China’s home-grown CNC technology.

Hubei’s Strategy to Become a World-Class CNC Machine Tool Hub

Hubei Province is backing its industrial ambitions with substantial policy and financial support. The industrial machine tool sector has been incorporated into the province’s ‘51020’ advanced manufacturing cluster development strategy. Key initiatives include:

  • An integrated ‘Chain Leader + Chain Owner + Chain Innovation’ development model
  • A dedicated RMB 5 billion industrial investment fund
  • The establishment of the Industrial Machine Tool Innovation Research Center

These combined measures are attracting innovation resources, specialized talent, and strategic capital to Hubei — supporting the province’s goal of becoming a world-class center for CNC machine tool manufacturing and innovation.
